Measure & Install Carpet

Measuring for Carpet

2. Degree the length and width of each room. Round your measurements up to the nearest half-foot. For example, if the length is 14 feet 3 inches, write down 14 feet 6 inches (14 1/2 feet).

Installing the Carpet


6. Remove all old carpeting and padding. Sweep the subfloor.


7. Add a tack strip to any that are already present. If there are not already tack strips in place, put two strips down, side by side, around the perimeter of the wall about 3/8 inch away from the wall.


8. Lay out your padding and cut to size with a razor blade.


9. Glue the padding at the seams. Duct tape over the seams.


10. Roll out the carpet until it is as flat as possible.


11. Follow the edges of the room with a razor blade to chop the carpet to size.


12. Label your drawing accordingly.4. Multiply the length by the width for each room and record the number on your plans.5.



14. Use the stair chisel to push the carpet between the wall and tack strip. Trim any overhanging edges.


15. Cover the edges of the walls with transition molding to finish the installation.
