Facts About The Cotton Textile Industry Of India

Accounting for 20 percent of industrial Industry, India's textile Production is one of the principal contributors to the state's economy. According to Dr. Chellasamy and Sumathi of Bharathiar University, Parsi cotton merchants instigated the birth of India's latest cotton textile Production during the 1850s to fair growing global demands for Indian cotton goods. Driven chiefly by burgeoning internal cotton Industry, Production products radius from no sweat hand-spun textiles to industrially manufactured cotton blends.

Size

As of the mid 2000s, the Indian cotton textile Production was reward sorrounding $38 billion, with extension of the Production heavily correlated with the rise and fall of cotton prices. Nevertheless, exports of cotton textiles include grown steadily throughout the latest decade, reaching $4.87 billion in 2006.

The Indian government has drastically liberalized its textile industry by aggressively slashing tariffs on imports and opening up its market to foreign investors. While it still provides local industries with large subsidies, it has shifted its interest from the production of raw textiles to higher-end manufacturing.

During India's independence movement, local hand loom industries played a symbolic role in Gandhi's effort to empower rural villages. As a result, the protection of rural production methods and businesses, despite potential inefficiencies, has become an important issue in Indian politics.

Vulnerability

Due to irrigation constraints, India's cotton production is dependent on the yearly monsoon season (June through September). The lack of transportation infrastructure drives a large part of cotton production into local manufacturing processes.
