Build A 6x8 Shed Roof

Production a roof is the crowning action in building a garden or yard shed. You can practise a manageable shed roof, which slopes from the front to the back, or a compounded gambrel or "barn" style. You can include it with corrugated metal, metal or vinyl shingles or other materials. However an pretty and quite elementary alternative is a basic gable roof with a modest 4/12 (4-inch rise per foot) pitch, covered with asphalt or Essay shingles to match the crash pad. It Testament be favorable practice provided you ever intend to roof a larger constitution.

Instructions

1. Create four trusses to frame a 6-foot-by-8-foot shed roof. Shorten eight rafters, starting with one as a replica. Levy a 6-foot high 2-inch-by-4-inch board on a Apartment lodgings surface with a 4-inch face-up. Rank the 4-inch location on the thin Language of a framing square and the 12-inch stop on the Broad blade at the top of the board with the site of the square at the backside. Site the angle that forms latest of the board with a pencil. That's the top or plumb incision.

2. Degree 38 inches down the backside of the board from the backside of that angle with a tape degree and stop the spot. Employ the square to trail a border 1 inch up into the board. Degree 3 1/2 inches back toward the plumb intersect on the backside of the board and employ the square to site a triangle between that objective and the top of the contour. That is the bearing stop mark or birds mouth.

3. Add 12 inches from the backside of the birds mouth triangle and objective another angle, alike the plumb abbreviate however putting the speck of the square at the top of the board. That is the extremity or tail intersect. Put a bottom panel on each side of the roof. Lay another panel above the first one on one side and nail it in place.7.

Settle rafters absent in pairs, one allot at a bit, on a Apartment lodgings surface with the plumb cuts flush against Everyone other. Fasten that crest with a metal gusset, a steel plate with spikes driven into the rafters, then secured with nails driven with a hammer nailed down the gusset into Everyone rafter. Degree 6 inches down from the backside of the top and place a 2-inch-by-4-inch board between the rafters. Purpose the angles on each side and cut the board to fit between the rafters. Fasten that cross tie with gussets on each rafter. Finish the truss by adding gussets on the other side of the truss.

5. Lift the trusses to the roof, one at a time. Set them plumb, using a level, and nail the birds mouths on each rafter to the wall tops with framing nails. Add "hurricane clips," metal brackets which overlap the rafter end and the wall cap and are nailed to both boards.

6. Nail temporary braces of 1-inch-by-2-inch boards or similar lumber about 6 inches long on the ends of the two interior trusses to support roof decking panels. Lay a 4-foot-by-8-foot sheet of oriented strand board on the edge of the roof, against the braces to keep it even. Nail it to the trusses every 18 inches. Section that representation rafter, locate it on the roof to analysis that the birds mouth fits tightly on the wall top and the plumb section is at the centre of the roof. Then intersect seven expanded rafters to the alike figure.4.

Snap a chalk line across the OSB where it crosses the peaks of the trusses. Use a circular saw or reciprocal saw to chop off the overhang. Repeat that step on the other side of the roof, but let that OSB panel overlap the top edge of the first panel.

8. Cover the OSB with strips of roofing paper, rolled out horizontally and fastened to the OSB with a construction stapler. Lay a bottom strip first, overlap the next strip by 6 inches. Cover the peak of the roof with a layer of paper laid across the peak and stapled down the roof on both sides.

9. Cut the tabs off one set of three-tab asphalt or composition shingles with a utility knife or big shears and nail those to the bottom of the roof, with the cut ends up so the finished end is flush with the bottom of the OSB or slightly over it. Drive shingle nails at the top of the shingle, so the next row will cover them. Cut 6 inches off the side of one shingle to begin the next row, so the vertical seams of the shingle panels don't align.

10. Work from the bottom to the peak on both sides of the roof. Cut the last row of shingles to fit exactly to the peak. Cover the peak with cap shingles. Use prepared caps if the shingle manufacturer supplies them; otherwise cut full shingles into rectangles, fold them over the peak and nail them on both sides. Work from one end of the roof to the other, going away from any prevailing wind direction. Nail caps at the ends, so the next cap overlaps; cover the nails on the last cap with roofing cement to seal them.
